Episode 3: It’s All DEVO

Something new: DEVO, Fresh It’s Fresh DEVO! Get it? OK, when I first started this podcast in late Winter, it was fresh and new. And now two weeks after the album came out, it’s still fresh and it’s still DEVO. And the album is great!
Something classic: DEVO, Mecha-Mania Boy A B-Side from New Traditionalist that popped up on my iPod. I said, what is this? I do not remember this song at all! It’s super quirky fun.
A mashup: DEVO, I’m a Girl U Want (The Monkees vs. Devo)-The Illuminoids OK, I’ll admit it, I just Googled for a mashup and found this. It’s not bad at all. And the Illuminoids are a fantastic bunch of remixers and mashupers!
Live: DEVO, Gut Feeling (Slap Your Mammy) This may be my favorite song on their first album. It captures all of their early punky rage, and a fair bit of their musicianship as well.

So three months after finishing the ‘cast, I can finally publish it!

Episode 2: Hold Back The Lumpy Rave Life

Something new: Flight Of The Conchords, Sugalumps There’s a couple of more upbeat songs on the new FOTC disc. This is one of them. Sadly, it doesn’t mix well into the next song. I do truly believe that the FOTC are some of the best music parody since The Dukes Of Stratosphere.
Something classic: Duran Duran, Hold Back The Rain (Carnival Remix) I was listening to the recent 2 CD reissue/remaster of Rio and I was reminded of how great of a song this is, and how great the remix is. Perhaps it does sound a bit 80s, but at least it’s not one of those 80s songs you always hear.
A mashup: ComaR, Knocklife Blur vs Lily Allen. Brilliant. How totally BritPop! I love the Lily Allen song. What a great way with words she has. This was one of the first mashups that made me go, “wow, what a great concept these mashups are”.
Live: Prince, Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic As many of you know, I love the live music. This song is a good reason why. It’s from what is generally considered one of the best Prince after shows ever. Amazing soundboard recording. Incredibly weird set list. And then to close it all off you get this (at the time) unreleased song with a great long guitar solo that just never stops. Oh sure it’s long, but listen to it and try to imagine being in a club with like 200-300 people watching this performance. This is what it’s all about to me.

Episode 1: Kick it off, girls!

Something new: Metric, Help I’m Alive I disovered this via Sirius radio. Metric = (Garbage – Butch Vig)/softer vocals. And they are from Canada, eh?
Something classic: Propaganda, Jewel It seemed that in ’84-’86 Zang Zumb Zuum Records could do no wrong. Frankie Goes To Hollywood and The Art of Noise were on ZTT and in the summer of ’85 I was already a fan. So one day at the record store a guy who knew I was into Synth Pop says “You’ve got to see this.” It was a beautiful double gatefold 7″ single of a Propaganda song, Jewel. He played it and I fell in love with it. Then he played the b-side: this evil sounding deconstruction of Jewel, called Duel. The other female vocalist sung it. Truly twisted. I got the single and then later the CD and to this day it’s one of my favorite albums. Sadly, like the rest of ZTT from that era, Propaganda fell apart. When they reformed later (with a new singer… an American, while the rest of the band is German) I discovered David Gilmour played on a track. Very odd.
A mashup: Mash2Mix Shut Up Your Delight (The Ting Tings vs. Sugarhill Gang vs. N.E.R.D. vs. Chic)This is a pretty good example of a mashup for those who are not familiar with the genre. Most mashups (or bootleg or bastard pop) take the lyrics from one song and play it over the music of another. Usually there’s some remixing, edit, and other sampling going on. This one is just slightly over the top with all aspects of the genre. Enjoy.
Live: Kate Bush with David Gilmour, Running Up That Hill The story of this track is that it was recorded live at the Secret Policeman’s Third Ball in March 1987. Kate Bush performing live (which is extremely rare in the first place) with David Gilmour riffing the keyboard part. There was an album/CD released from the show back in the day. I remember holding it in my hand several times. Apparently, these many many years later, it’s way out of print and I didn’t have any part of it all at all. The video of the performance is easily found on YouTube.

Welcome to the Podcast! My idea is very simple. 4 songs.

Song 1: Something recent that I’ve been enjoying listening to
Song 2: Something classic, like rock, 80s (probably), or a hidden gem
Song 3: A mashup, because I listen to a lot of mashup and some are too good not to share
Song 4: A live track, or a Pink Floyd track, or probably a live Pink Floyd track because that’s what I listen to the most!
